DRAWING CONCLUSIONS

Taking up a class called GENDERS has its perks, there are times when you'd open your eyes to different things and points of view and develop yourself into a better person. Last week we had this activity on different genders it was called “Drawing Conclusions”, we were grouped into six groups.

Given a piece of Manila paper and a marker, each group had to draw their point of view on the gender or orientation given to them. The people to draw were Gay, Bisexuals, Lesbians, Transgenders, Straight Female and Straight Male. Seeing how our classmates interpret each in a drawing was quite interesting, you would really see how they look at these people or how society looks at these people.

Our group was assigned to Gay, I also found out that the term “gay” is always referred to the male homosexuals, I always thought that this referred to homosexuals in general. So what we did was draw a well dressed man with good hair and expensive accessories. We dressed him up in a sharp button down shirt, cute shorts and a very expensive Hermes “H” belt. We chose this type of image because its what we usually see in society, or in the gay society. Gays are men that prefer having an intimate or a romantic relationship with another man rather than a woman, they do not dress up as women or feel like “a woman trapped in a man's body”, okay maybe some don't but we never know because each person is different. We also discussed the positive and the negative side of our assigned gender. What we as a group pointed out as a positive effect is that, because of the lifestyle that gay men live they tend to work harder to earn more. They are also caring and their feminine attributes contributes to this positive effect. And the negative effects that their lifestyle brings to them is the pressure to live by it. Or the pressure to meet the standards of their lifestyle, take for example the movie “I Love You Philip Morris” starring Jim Carey  his lifestyle contributed to his downfall.

The other groups showed great outputs as well, just like the group assigned to straight/ heterosexual females they showed that this kind of gender or preference falls under women who would prefer to live their lives married to a heterosexual male. And this goes the same with heterosexual males, they prefer to be married to heterosexual females. Unlike transsexuals who are born physically male but later on go under the transition of becoming physically female, they prefer having a relationship with heterosexual males and be treated like females. Then there's the group assigned to lesbians, they showed two common types of lesbians “butch”, these are the ones that dress up and act like a heterosexual male, they tend to take the dominant or the male role in their same sex relationships. While the “lipstick” lesbians are women who prefer engaging in a relationship with another woman, they dress up and act like regular or society depicted heterosexual females, but they would rather be in an intimate relationship with other women or lesbians, may this be “butch” or an equal”lipstick”. And i think, that they really did well because they considered the different types of lesbians, not just the society depicted “butch”. And the last group presented the bisexuals, most people or most homosexuals (may be gays or lesbians) say that there is no such thing as bisexuals, they are usually put in comparison to the unicorn, a non existent creature found in fairy tales  But the truth is no one could really judge these bisexuals for their preference of jumping from one gender to another, they tend to be open towards doing heterosexual or homosexual practices.

This activity really opened my eyes to the different kinds of gender and to the fact that we shouldn't judge each other rather understand one another. No one deserves to be put down and no one deserves to be left out.

INTERVIEW:

> I chose to interview my father on how they were expected to behave in his time.

Me: So dad how were you expected
to behave as a guy when you were in my age?

Dad: It was simpler times kasi, everyone was
traditional and they knew their roles in society.
Eh when I was your age naman we were
expected to be teenagers and young boys.
But I in the other hand did enjoy my teenage years.
We played sports we went out with our friends,
studied, do school work. Regular teenage things to do.
We would even sneak out to go dancing or
drinking and sneak back in before daybreak,
we really worked hard and enjoyed our youth.
As long as we didn't let our studies go,
there were no problems with our parents. HAHA

After interviewing my father, I realized that his way of growing up and mine were no different. Especially the part where studies come first. I as well didn't experience any problems with my parents as long as my studies came first.
